Sample #1: Meet Your Local Mosquito Experts

Since 1952, the Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District has protected more than six million residents across 36 cities and unincorporated Los Angeles County from mosquitoes and vector-borne diseases.
Funded through property and special assessment taxes, the District provides mosquito, black fly, and midge control services to residents and businesses throughout its service area. Direct services include property inspections, mosquitofish for eligible water sources, and community education through informational booths and presentations.
District staff work year-round to protect public health through vector surveillance, targeted control efforts, and community education to help reduce mosquito populations and the risk of diseases such as West Nile virus.
If you have a mosquito-related concern or would like to request a service, visit GLAmosquito.org or call 562-944-9656.
Sample #2: Mosquitoes, West Nile Virus, and How to Protect Yourself

Mosquitoes are more than just a nuisance. They can transmit diseases that affect both people and animals, including West Nile virus, the most common mosquito-borne disease in Los Angeles County.
Mosquitoes are attracted to the carbon dioxide we exhale, our body heat, and our natural body odor. As temperatures rise and more people spend time outdoors, taking simple precautions can help reduce mosquito bites.
Protect yourself by using an EPA-registered insect repellent containing at least 15% DEET, Picaridin, IR3535, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus. Wearing loose-fitting, long-sleeved clothing can also help reduce mosquito bites.
See a dead bird? Report it. Dead birds can serve as an early warning sign of West Nile virus activity and help public health officials monitor disease activity in the community. Report dead birds at WestNile.ca.gov.

Sample #3: Stop Mosquitoes at the Source

Mosquitoes can turn a relaxing backyard into an itchy, frustrating experience in just a matter of days. Did you know that mosquitoes only need a bottle cap of water to complete their life cycle? Under the right conditions, mosquitoes can develop from egg to adult in as little as one week. Because mosquitoes begin their life cycle in water, eliminating standing water is one of the most effective ways to reduce mosquito populations before they become flying adults.
Buckets, plant saucers, bird baths, neglected swimming pools, and other water-holding containers can quickly become mosquito breeding sites. Residents can help reduce mosquito activity around their homes by:
- Emptying, covering, or tossing containers that collect water at least once a week
- Changing the water in pet bowls and bird baths daily
- Maintaining swimming pools and spas
- Reporting neglected (green) swimming pools
Don't forget to protect yourself from mosquito bites by using an insect repellent containing at least 15% DEET, Picaridin, IR3535, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus. Taking these few simple steps can help protect your home and community throughout the mosquito season.
